Wildlife
in Kerala
Periyar National Park
Periyar National Park lies high in the mountain ranges of
the Westerns Ghats in Kerala and is immensely famous for its tiger
reserve. Having a picturesque lake at the heart of Periyar Wildlife
Sanctuary, the park is the habitat of birds as well as many wild animals,
including Nilgiri Tahr.
A herd of elephants and sambhars, gaurs and wild pigs wander down
to the lakeside and they can be seen at close quarters from the launches.
In March and April, during the driest period here, you can see them
bathing and swimming in the reservoir. What's more, you can see leopard,
wild dog barking deer and mouse deer. Visitors often come across a
python and sometimes even a king cobra.
Among the unusual species found in the park are flying lizard and
the flying snake. You can see the flying lizard with wings of orange
or yellow as it glides from one tree to the other. The flying snake
is also yellow and black-colored with a pattern of red rosettes. On
the rocky outcrops along the lake, monitor lizards are seen basking
in the sun.
Birds like the Darters, Cormorants, grey heron and Ibis come to the
lake and you may see them perched on the snags of dead wood. The great
Malabar Hornbill and grey Hornbill are found flapping their ponderous
way between tress. There are Kingfishers, Ospreys, and Kites as well
as Orioles, Hill Mynas, Mynas, racket-tailed Drongos, Parakeets including
blue-winged Parakeet and Flycatchers. Of course, you can hear the
liquid notes of Malabar whistling thrush and the loud noise of the
hornbills.
Four types of species are found at the park-the rare lion-tailed macaque,
the Nilgiri langur, Common langur, and bonnet macaque. These wild
animals can be seen from motor launches on the lake and also from
watchtowers.
Wildlife attractions in Park:
Apart from elephants, animals found here are Gaur, Wild Pigs,
Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very
rarely a tiger. There are now an approximately 40 tigers here. Darters,
Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed
Dronges are also seen at times. The reptilian boast of Monitor lizards
can be spotted basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary:
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is set high in the mountain ranges of the
Western Ghats in Kerala. It has an enchanting lake. Formed with the
building of a Dam in 1895, this reservoir meanders around the contours
of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the
local wild life. Even though it's a Tiger Reserve, tourists come here
to witness the Indian elephants in the act of ablution and playfulness
by the Periyar Lake.
Some attractions in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary:
- Kumily: About 4 km from Periyar, Kumily is a growing town where
tourism is fastly catching up just like the spice trade (the major
trade of this small town). Excellent hotels and resorts available
here.
- Cardamom Hills: Periyar and Kumily are the most convenient points
from which visitors can easily explore Kerala's beautiful Cardamom
Hills.
- Boat Cruises: Boat Cruises make the best option to see wild
animals of the Sanctuary. Periyar lake presents an excellent opportunity
for tourists. Though it is difficult to see many animals from
the boats, you can spot a herd of elephants, wild bears, and sambar
Deer by the water edge. Boats are available on-hire basis.
How to get there:
Air: Cochin (in Kerala) at 200 km and Madurai (in Tamil
Nadu) at 140 km are the two nearest airports from Periyar.
Rail: Kottayam at 114 km is the nearest railway station
from Periyar.
Road: Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar, is well
served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Erankulam
and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
The best months to visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
are from October and June. However, you must note that the chances
of seeing animals after heavy rains are very bleak, as animals
come out only if there are not enough water resources inside the
forest.
