Wildlife
in Kerala
Kumarakom Sanctuary
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is also referred as an ornithologist's paradise.
Many migratory birds like darter, egret, heron, Siberian stork, crane,
and teal and many more... come to the sanctuary from the Himalayas,
some even from as far as Siberia. You can see local birds like cuckoo,
the water duck, the waterfowl, heron, owl, parrot, wood beetle and
flycatcher during their respective migratory seasons. Moreover, you
might get excited when you see an unbelievably beautiful paradise
of mangrove forests, green paddy fields, and coconut groves interspersed
with cool waterways and canals adorned with lilies. Truly, a little
world of thatched houseboats, Cormorants, Chinese fishing nets, and
palm-fringed lagoons is ideal for a vacation.
Attractive places of Kumarakom
Pathiramanal: Pathiramanal is a fascinating island on the Vembanad
Lake. It houses many rare species of birds coming from all over the
world. With regard to Vembanad Lake, there is a myth that a young
Brahmin would dive into the lake to take evening ablutions, and so
the water affected the land, which rose from below. It covers 10 acres
on the cool backwaters.
The Kumarakom Tourist Complex: The Kumarakom Tourist Complex was built
around the 50-year-old "Baker's Mansion." It has an area
of about 101 acres of wooded land and lake. Previously, it was a small
hotel, managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).
Now the Taj Kerala Resorts Ltd has turned it into hotel of grand style.
Kumarakom Village: Kumarkom village is built with a cluster of little
islands on the Vembanad Lake. You can experience this tiny water world
in the Kuttanad region.
Lastly, there's an enchanting backwater at Kumarakom.
How to view
Many Kettuvalloms (traditional houseboats) and motorboats are
rented on the lake for a cruise around the sanctuary.
When to Visit
June to August is the time for bird watching; for migratory birds,
the best time is November to February.
