History of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Kerala
In the year 1952, the then prime minister of India visited Alappuzha.
In honor of his visit, a boat race was organized in Alappuzha. Nadubhagam
Chandan emerged as the winner of this boat race. Panditji was simply
elated at their success.
Without bothering about the security arrangements he jumped into the
winning boat. The boat sailed with him to the jetty. After his return
to Delhi, a silver trophy was built following his instructions. It
was to be given to the winner of that race. The trophy itself was
named after him as the Nehru trophy. The trophy resembles a snake
boat placed on a wooden base and the following words are inscribed
To the winners of the boat race which is a unique feature of
community life in Travancore Cochin.
Ever since, this boat race is being held to commemorate his visit.
